Meet Hazel — a round little hedgehog in cream chenille, her whole back and crown covered in dark brown picot spines. Soft felt-backed eyes, a small embroidered nose, tiny surface-crocheted ears and feet, and a red spotted mushroom tucked between her paws. She stands about 14 cm (5.5 in) tall, worked in chenille bulky yarn on a 4.0 mm hook.
The pattern calls her beginner-friendly and low-sew, and that's how she reads. Single crochet, increases, invisible decreases, a little half double and a simple picot — all written out round by round with the stitch count in brackets. The body holds at 30 stitches for eighteen straight rounds, so most of the make is calm, repetitive and easy to pick up between other things.
Her body is one piece from the crown down, and the arms are crocheted straight into round 15 — no arm sewing at all. Ears and feet are surface-crocheted directly onto the body. The spines are worked into reserved front loops after closing, so nothing is stitched on. Only the optional mushroom needs tacking into place. 💗
